Friends can wreck havoc on your desire to be fit. They can sweet talk you into dinner and a movie when you wanted to hit the gym.
Friends can also help you become fit and keep you fit. The trick is picking the right ones. Don’t abandon the dinner and movie friends, just pick up a few new spin class and a few laps of the pool friends.
5 Ways Your Friends Can Keep You Fit
1. Inspiration
Is there someone in your group of friends that has completed a physical fete you dream of doing yourself. Use them to keep you motivated. Every time you want to give up remind yourself of them and how at one time they had to be a newbie just like you, after all we don’t all come out of the womb completing an Ironman. (yep I got a friend who has done an Ironman and I use her to inspire myself often).
2. Companionship
As an introvert I crave alone time but too much alone time and I start getting quirky. I love running once a week with my pal I affectionately call “the redhead runner”. We chat away the miles together.
3. Accountability
I started running consistently at the same time the redhead runner decided to take up running for the first time. We quickly started our once a week running ritual. Knowing I had to keep up with her that one day a week, made me stick to my routine the rest of the week, I did not want to let her down.
4. Motivation
Nothing makes you spring out of bed at 4:30 in the morning like knowing you are going to keep your friend waiting if you don’t quickly run downstairs get your running gear on and get driving to your meeting place.
Besides having to be on time for someone though, friends can also motivate you by cheering you on, and encouraging you to push further.
5. Fun
I could spend days retelling funny stories of things that have happened to my friends and I while running. The redhead runner and I giggle so hard on some runs we get stitches in our side.
For instance there was this one time we saw raccoons ahead and decided to holler and clap to scare away them away only to discover a lady out on her front porch drinking her morning coffee looking a bit confused.
So grab a friend who desires to get and stay fit just as much as you do and start using each other to stay motivated and dedicated and most importantly have fun building memories together.
