Nothing makes me feel more settled in a community than knowing my way around it. A great way to do that is to make Sunday drives a ritual for a while.Pick a destination, perhaps something of your too see list, and take a new road both there and the way home.
My favorite way to get to know the roads and neighborhoods of a new town? Yard Sale Shopping. When I moved to our new town I didn’t hit just the community wide sales like I do now that I am settled, instead each and every weekend I picked 6 sales that sounded interesting and mapped out a route to and from each of them.
By the time the first summer in our new town was over, I had figured out all sorts of different ways to get to and from church and grocery shopping as well as found a small handful of community parks and mom and pop restaurants that soon became my families favorites. I discovered most of these routes while yard sale shopping.
A great way to know the roads beyond your new town but still in your new state is to make date night in a different neighboring town at least once a month while you are settling in. My husband and I found all sorts of neat neighboring communities this way that we soon shared with our children.
However you do it, just make sure you do. I guarantee it will quicken the process of making your new town your home town.
