Dirt cake is a fun no-bake recipe for kids of all ages. It doesn’t take a lot of time to make and since it doesn’t have to be baked, it makes a great summer dessert. Who wants to turn on the oven when it is hot outside? Not me!

It’s too hot to cook lately so I have been digging in my recipe books, boxes, and binders for desserts that don’t require turning on the oven. Dirt cake has got to be one of my favorite no-bake desserts.

Ingredients For Dirt Cake

  • 1 pint heavy whipping cream
  • 2 boxes of instant chocolate pudding
  • 3 cups milk (2% or higher milk fat)
  • 1 box of cream cheese (original 8-ounce size)
  • 1/2 cup of icing sugar (known by various names, but this is the type I mean)
  • 1 1/2 boxes Oreo cookies
  • 1 bag of gummy worms (this is my family’s favorite brand, vibrant colors–and they even have faces!)

Equipment Needed For Dirt Cake

A Trifle Bowl Full Of Dirt Cake

I like using a glass trifle bowl for a pretty presentation, but any large bowl or even a nine by thirteen pan would work.

Here are a few more pieces of kitchen equipment you will need to make dirt cake:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Hand mixer (I have this one by KitchenAid and love it! Finally–a hand mixer that can handle big batches of cookie dough without its motor giving out!)
  • Measuring cups
  • Spatulas (I bought this inexpensive silicone set of three a while back and love that there is no way the end of the spatula can fall off the handle)
  • Food processor (if you don’t own one, a Ziploc bag and a rolling pin works in a pinch)

How To Assemble Dirt Cake

It doesn’t take long to throw dirt cake together.

  1. Mix the chocolate pudding with the milk and beat for two minutes
  2. Place pudding mixture in the fridge
  3. Whip up the heavy cream
  4. Cube up the cream cheese and add it to the freshly whipped cream
  5. Add in the icing sugar
  6. Add in the chocolate pudding
  7. Place Oreo cookies in the food processor and blend it until it is crumbling (If you don’t have a food processor, place them in a Ziploc bag and beat them with a rolling pin. they will be large pieces, but that won’t matter.)
  8. Place a layer of pudding mixture in the bottom of your container
  9. Layer ⅓ of the cookie crumbles on top
  10. Place another layer of pudding mixture on top of cookie crumbles
  11. Layer another ⅓ of cookies
  12. Place another layer of pudding mixture on top
  13. Finish with the last ⅓ of the cookie crumbles
  14. Top with gummy worms
  15. Keep in the fridge until it is time to serve

I have not come across a person yet who doesn’t like Dirt Cake.

Thanks! I am glad you liked it. Fun for adults too! I served it at a party we had this weekend and I could not help but noticed all the adults who had some made sure to pick out a gummy worm too! LOL

I really haven’t paid attention to how many servings I get out of it, but depending on the age of kids I would say 10 to 12. If they are really little kids it will probably go farther than that.
