You find a workout you love, you make it a priority, you even find a friend to join you once a week, but then one day at the gym you eye a fit woman on the treadmill beside you and you just heard her tell another gym member that she is running 21 miles with a friend this Saturday.
The voice starts to attack, you know the one. “What am I thinking”, “I can’t do this”. “I can’t even walk a mile, how will I ever be able to run my goal 5k”. Or perhaps you just ran that 5k and were feeling pretty proud of it but now hearing real life people actually run races 8 times that length deflates your encouraged spirit.
The very next day you are on the couch indulging in a big bowl of ice cream ignoring the fact that you day planner says you should be at the gym because………The number one killer of sticking to a fitness plan is comparison.
Here is what that girl on the treadmill who is going to run 21 miles this Saturday wants you to know.
Don’t let that voice win
I too once was unfit
I once could not run the distance between two telephone poles.
It took me over 3 years to get from a run the distance between 2 telephone poles to running my first marathon.
I won’t be running that 21 miles with ease, I will be taking walking breaks, and I will be sore and tired afterwards.
Please do not use me as a form of self punishment, instead use me as motivation.
If I can do this, you can do this.
I am no one special.
I too struggle with that voice. That voice tells me I run so slow I should just give up. That voice tells me I might be fit, but “I could never be fit enough to do an Ironman or a century bike race, or a 100 mile running race”, “those people are fit, I am just a wanna be”.
I have even allowed that voice to win. I have given up several times before, but not again……….
I know now I am a unique creation, knitted together by a loving creator and I am wonderfully made. God doesn’t compare me to woman that can do all those longer than a marathon races. He compares me to me. He desires me to be my best me.
Don’t allow wrong comparison to keep you from your dreams of becoming fit. Keep moving forward while sweating those wrong thoughts away and pretty soon you will be doing exactly what your little voice said you couldn’t.
