I interrupt the series From New Town to Hometown: Creating Friendships & Community to bring you a silly story that happened during our first year of settling in.
I am all about rituals and routines. I figure out what works best for our stage of life and then stick to it until our stage of life changes, sometimes that takes months, sometimes just weeks. When we had an infant, a two year old,and a homeschooling 6 year old that meant that I went to Walmart for groceries Friday mornings the minute my husband got home from his night shift.
My husband would usually be up for about 1 hour before he went to sleep for the day, so in that hour I would rush to Walmart alone, grab groceries, drive home, get the perishables put away and then my hubby would hand me the baby and kiss me goodnight.
The great thing was it meant I got to Walmart before 8 a.m. so the store was always empty and I never had to wait in line to pay. Well except for the day, during our first year here in the States when I went to Walmart the day after American Thanksgiving.
That chilly November morning I noticed right away the extra traffic on the streets. When I pulled into the shopping center parking lot I noticed it was packed. When I got into the Walmart what I saw made this introvert turn around and flee, the place was packed. There were line ups clear to the back of the store.
I went home and asked my hubby did he happen to know if something big in the world had happened, he looked at me oddly and said “no.” Then I saw my neighbor outside and decided to ask her. She started laughing at my story and said “Victoria, there is no national emergency it is just Black Friday.”
And that is how this introverted Canadian was introduced to Black Friday and never in my 11 years have I once felt the urge to stand in those lines for deals. I will shop in my PJ’s on Cyber Monday with the rest of the crowd haters.
