The other day my husband and children were taking apart our old shed in our backyard to make room for a larger one.
As they got to the walls, I couldn’t help but notice the effort it took them to tear them apart.
The walls decades old contained surprises like 1000’s of nails when there should have been handfuls, as well as bugs and even a bees nest (thankfully it was still too cold out to be active).
As I stood back to take a picture for Instagram I was struck by a thought, just as physical walls are hard to remove so are the walls we place around our own hearts.
A person hurt me so badly when I was young that I became an expert wall builder. When I got older and the person was no longer a threat to me, those walls still remained intact and almost kept out the person whom I am building my current home with.
Ugly walls, full of shards require sweat and hard work to remove, whether they be physical or emotional.
That hard work however is worth every ounce of sweat. Our home now has a shed large enough to fit our bikes and our tools.
My heart now is filled with the joy brought by the love of a man whom I tore the walls away for and the laughter of the children that were created from that love.
If you are struggling with emotional walls, remember not what pain from the past they were created for but what joy of the present and future they are keeping you from.
“And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.” Ezekiel 36:26
