How My Husband And I Began Free Dating

Many years ago, I approached my husband and suggested we stop funding date nights in our budget, but still continue to go out on dates.

Why? Reason number one, we had reached our 40s and the oversized portions enjoyed on many of our date night adventures had started showing on our bodies. Free dates tend to be more activity focused, which I hoped would keep us active then and in the future (spoiler alert, it has).

Second, we had some larger-than-average bills come up and date night was an easy budget category to get rid of for a while.

I can’t remember how long we kept our date nights free, but we still enjoy numerous free dates every month even though we are once again putting money aside each paycheck for dates.

1. Stick To Ideas That Use Equipment You Own Or Can Borrow

You might not have roller skates, but perhaps you have bikes. So instead of roller skating around the park, go for a bike ride.

2.  Use Free Babysitting Options Or At Home Dates If You Have Little Ones

A babysitting swap night with friends worked well for us when our children were little and we wanted to do something out of the house. For dates we could do at home, we made it a priority to wear the kids out with a bit of extra activity the night we wanted to do a date night at home.

3. Pack a Cooler

For ideas that take you away from home for a few hours, pack a cooler filled with snacks and drinks. This will save you from being tempted to blow the budget on fast food or convenience store drinks and snacks.

4. Pick The Ideas That Match Your Interests

There are a lot of ideas on this list. Some are going to sound totally lame to you. But chances are they won’t to a person who has interests in that area.

For instance, if you don’t like reading, you will think a reading date is boring, but my husband and I LOVE reading, so snuggling up on a blanket under the shade of a tree is an awesome free day for us.

5. Combine Ideas To Fit Your Time Frame

Some of these ideas will make a better date when combined with another idea. For instance, a backyard fire in your fire pit probably isn’t a great date by itself, but combine it with an evening of sleeping outside in a tent and taking in the sunset, and you have the makings of a great free date.

1. Play The Yard Games You Own

My husband and I can’t be the only ones with a cornhole set collecting cobwebs in the shed.

2. Visit A Local Nursery And Plan Out Your Dream Garden

We have done this several times and absolutely enjoy ourselves.

3. Play On The Playground

Being like kids together keeps the sparks alive. Relive your childhood by taking advantage of an empty playground. See who can go highest on the swing, fastest down the slide, or hold onto the monkey bars the longest.

4. Read Together

Find a shady spot and throw a blanket down; add a few pillows and you have the perfect reading nest for two. You can read to each other, or each read your own book, which is what my husband and I do. And, of course, pause from reading now and again for kisses.

5. Dream-storm Together

Grab a pen and a pad of paper, sit side by side on the porch swing, and list everything that comes to mind that you would like to try doing together over the next 5-10 years. No ideas are too small, too big, too expensive, or too crazy!

6. Take Over A Pool

My husband and I had the most relaxing free date one summer when our friends told us we were more than welcome to use their pool while they were on vacation.

We brought a picnic basket full of food to our friend’s house. We ate our homemade feast on our friend’s patio and then spent hours floating around on big inflatable loungers, chatting, dreaming, and relaxing.

7. Take A Hike

Use the free version of the Alltrails app to find the nearest trails to get out and hike together.

8. Enjoy An Outdoor Movie Night In Your Own Backyard

Grab the popcorn, drinks, blankets, pillows, and whatever device you need to watch a movie.

9. Take In A Free Summer Community Event

Many communities have free concerts in the summertime as well as free festivals. Check your local visitor center for a list of free events in your town.

10. Take Advantage Of Whatever Waterfront Your Town Has

Riverwalk, beach walk, or trail around the lake; get out there and enjoy it together.

As long as you are together and the children are not underfoot, it counts as a date. I love chore dates as my husband tends to open up and talk more during them.

If your finances are super tight, perhaps it might be necessary to work extra jobs to pay the bills. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have time together, you might have to spend it earning money together.

56. Hold A Resell Challenge

Pick a few things that you are willing to resell. Then take that money and go out to find items to resell. Whoever makes the highest returns wins. You decide the prize; it doesn’t have to be a monetary one. Repeat as often as you want.
