The other night, I was all done writing for the day and the family was still out. The house was quiet, and I still had a bit of energy left.
So I seized the opportunity to work on a project that I had been mowing over in my brain for a while.
I had been looking at hair accessories for my daughter, and noticing how outrageous some of the prices were for a simple piece of elastic with a plastic flower attached.
After a bit of looking at how the fancy ones were made, I picked up the plain package of stay put headbands. The price was just under $3 for 6.
I figured I had to have something around the house already that I could use to fancy them up.
With just a few seconds spent searching one of my many craft supply shelves, I came across my collection of colorful buttons. I use to use these buttons to embellish the small crochet purses I made up for Courtney and her friends when they were toddlers.
I threaded a needle with black thread and then left a long tail when I started to sew on the button and one when I was finished sewing on the button. I triple knotted the thread tails together to make them super strong. I also went through the button hole numerous times to make sure the button was super secure.
Make sure the buttons you use are the type that have holes through the top. You do not want the ones with loops attached to the back of them as they will not lay flat.
I had fun playing around with color patterns, and my daughter was thrilled that I had made her some. She now wants me to make them for her friends birthdays. She also insisted we have another “crafting with Courtney” date this weekend so I can show her how to make them herself.
If you don’t have colorful buttons lying around, I noticed that Walmart carries a large supply of them right now. I didn’t see the prices as I knew I had some at home, but I am guessing even if you had to buy your buttons, these headbands would still be less than $1 to make.

Your post came along at just the right time! My daughter got some hand-me-down leggings from her cousin – which I didn’t care for. But, the sparkly little flower- shaped buttons attached to the leggings were fabulous! Now I know what I’m doing with them, thanks to you!

Need buttons? When I go to a thrift store or a garage sale that is having fill-a-bag for $___. I find items that I need for myself and my kids; then I look for clothing items that have cool buttons on them. That way you are still paying the same price for the bag, but you are getting the buttons for “free.”
