simple tools for setting up an effective mobile office anywhere

(above: my mobile office during the week of my daughter’s art camp)

A few months ago I was over at the home of  Ashley of  Life by Ashely Pichea and came down with real office envy. Ashely has a real office with 4 walls, a door, desk, office chair, and no other purpose for the room but to be an office. On the way home I made myself feel better by reminding myself of the benefits of my mobile office.

I can set up an office anywhere in a matter of minutes which works great for the stage of life I am in. I have blogged in coffee shops, my SUV, closets, bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, even bathrooms (it was my own and I was desperate for a room with no one in it).

Here are some simple tools for setting up an effective mobile office: anywhere, in case you find yourself like me: with an office that has no home to call its own.

1. A laptop

This should be obvious but to be portable you need a laptop. I was surviving of an old one that had no battery life and was held together with duct tape, but now I have a MacBook Pro and am loving how many more places I can go now that I no longer have to worry about finding a place to plug it in (well at least not until the battery dies but that takes hours).

2. A  personal sized folding table

I have 2 personal sized folding tables and I love them. Normally I keep one upstairs and one downstairs. However, I have also been known to have both together side by side, one with my books and the holds my laptop.

What is really nice is that they are adjust to three different heights giving me flexibility. I also love that they fold flat as it allows me to throw them in the back of the SUV with ease to use when I am waiting for a child to finish a lesson or to take camping or to the park on a sunny day, or…..the options are endless.

3. A LapDesk

I love my LapDesk, I bring mine to Starbucks with me all the time. I also find it handy if I am going to work on my laptop outside or in the SUV.

4. Ear protection ear muffs

I often hide out in my room to write while my husband holds down the fort. One child in particular has been blessed with a booming voice, so I use my ear protection ear muffs to block him out. Looks silly but works.

5. Laptop sleeve

If I am going to blog away from home I like to give my laptop a bit more protection while in transport with my laptop sleeve.

6. A small cosmetic kit

I use a free target cosmetic bag for storing my charge cord when not in use. Making it handy to bring along if I am writing out of the home.

7. Canvas tote bag

I love my Lands’ End medium sized canvas tote bag for transporting everything I need for a writing day away from home. It stands up on its own and holds my laptop, bloggy binder and other supplies I need keeping everything neatly within my reach.

8. A sturdy binder

I like the staples brand of heavy duty binders. I use one to keep everything bloggy related in.

9. A collapsible chair

If I am going to be writing while waiting on a child to finish a lesson and it is a nice day I like to throw my moon chair, into the back of the SUV to write in while soaking up the sun in whatever green space I can find nearby.

10. A pencil case full of supplies

I have a pencil case that fits into my binder. In it I keep all the supplies I need to write such as, pencils, erasers, pens, sticky notes, and a pack of gum (I often like to chew on an idea).

Would you add anything to my portable office list?

Thanks so much for these great tips.
I’ll be purchasing a folding table (or two!) soon.
    Blessings,
    Catherine 🙂

Your welcome. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. They have so many uses beyond blogging, I also use them for my sewing table.

You know that saying, “The grass is always greener…” 🙂 While I’m thankful for my office, I’m SO glad to finally have a laptop to being able to take my work to other parts of the house (and out of the house)! I need to reorganize my “blogging bag” so I can keep all my stuff together.

P.S. I’m totally checking out several of the product links you’ve listed above. Thanks!!

I love this idea! I have a nice laptop bag from 31 that I’ve been using, and it works great, but having the personal size folding table and chair would be great to throw in the van, too! Thanks for sharing!
