So last week I told you that I needed to press the reset button and get my routine back on track after the crazy lazy days of summer.
I was staying up at least 2 hours later than normal and therefore sleeping 2 hours later most days. I was feeling really rushed in the mornings and this snail pacer really dislikes being rushed.
So I took the time to reread Make Over Your Mornings and Make Over Your Evenings to refresh myself on what it takes to start and end a day well and I made myself both a morning routine and a night routine.
Here are a few things I discovered about pressing the reset button on my morning and evening routines
I dress better when I pick my clothing out the night before
In Make Over Your Evenings Crystal mentions that one way to prepare for a less rushed morning is to pick out an outfit for the next day before you go to bed.
I was doing this for a short while this spring and then I just fell out of the habit. This week when I picked up the habit once again I noticed by mid week that I had felt better about what I was wearing all week.
When I pick an outfit in the morning, I am often rushed and just grab the first thing I see. A tank top and shorts becomes my daily uniform and forget jewelry–who has time for that? But when I pick my outfit out at night I have time to think about my outfit. I also have the time to add accessories to it.
It is rough to get up with that alarm the first few mornings
The first two days I got up with my alarm I was really tired, but by day three I woke up well rested before the alarm.
My tip is to place your alarm clock far away from where you are sleeping so you have to get out of bed to turn it off. Place your robe and clothes for the next day beside it–so you can hit the ground with everything you need to be ready for your day. Also turn on those lights as soon as you can. Of course, if you have a sleeping spouse beside you that might mean waiting until you are in the next room.
Eventually you do start getting tired earlier
The reason it was so hard to get up those first two mornings is that I had not gotten the 7 to 8 hours sleep my body likes. I simply wasn’t able to fall asleep early enough to get those hours in since my body was used to a much later bed time. By night three though, my body gave in to the earlier bedtime that was needed and I was able to wake up on time without feeling groggy.
There are always more hurdles in sticking to your routine than you might think
Getting to bed earlier was harder than getting up earlier. Each night I had to juggle things with my husband and my older son that drives so that I didn’t need to be out picking up my younger son or daughter at a time when I should be in bed.
No one needs to be picked up from an event at 4:45 in the morning!
Now I realize I am not always going to be able to crawl into bed by 9 each night, but for the first week I really wanted to do my best to make it happen so that a habit was formed.
Even if you don’t follow the guidelines of a course perfectly you can reap rewards
I did not follow all the suggestions of Make Over Your Mornings and Make Over Your Evenings to the letter. For instance, I did not make a to do list at night even though Crystal, the course author, swears it is a huge productivity must. I know that I am not a person who can make my to do list in the evening.
I know for a lot of people it helps them stop thinking about all they need to remember to do the next day but for me it gets me thinking, “Oh, I can knock that off the list right now,” and then next thing I know I am in bed hours later than I wanted to be.
I write my to do list in the morning and you know what? I don’t feel rushed each day doing so.
While I was thinking on this last week it reminded me that many people toss courses and such completely aside because one point doesn’t work for them–guess what: you can still reap rewards from courses like Make Over Your Evenings and Make Over Your Mornings even if a few points don’t work for you.
Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water–instead reap a harvest from what works and store the rest to share with friends it might work for.
You have to do it for you and no one else
When I pressed publish on last Monday’s post I was really hoping that many of you would comment and say, “I am so in!” And I got crickets. Not a single person said, “Me too!” And for 24 hours it was all that I could think about. I almost scrapped the whole idea of sharing live Facebook updates on how I was doing, but I decided I needed the accountability of updates whether or not others joined in.
I have missed my un-rushed early morning hours for quite some time. I needed them back. This challenge was truly 100% about me and that is why it worked.
If you are about to make a change in your life, you need to dig deep first and find out if you are 100% in or if you are allowing someone else to make you think you need this. Until you are 100% in–the change won’t stick.
