I have learned a thing or two over my decade of homeschooling. One of the things I have learned is that good supplies make your day go a lot smoother.
Here is a list of the top 3 office items I would recommend investing in if you plan to homeschool.
1. An all in one printer or a photocopier
Our all in one printer, is now just a photocopier. We have had it for close to 7 to 8 years I think but for some reason about 3 years ago it stopped registering our computers. It was cheaper for our family to purchase a simple printer for the computers and continue using the all in one for photocopies, than to replace it with another all in one.
We use the photocopy feature of our all in one, daily for school. I have curriculum that allows people to photocopy contents for siblings.
I also make photocopies of work I know a child will struggle with and therefore may need to do a rough draft and a final draft.
Frugal tip: Before you buy any printer make sure that you check out the price of a refill cartridge of ink. I suggest going to the refill cartridge area of the store first, picked up the least expensive package of ink, and then bring it over to the salesmen in the printer area and ask “what printer does this go to?”.
Now that my eldest does most of his assignments on his laptop instead of in a workbook our heavy duty hole punch is indispensable for helping us file his work into binders, once he prints it off for marking.
3. An Electric Pencil Sharpener.
I put off buying an electric pencil sharpener for years. We made do with manual ones, which would continually get lost or broken.
Now I have no idea why I bulked at the price of an electric one, it was worth every penny. I did put out some extra money for pencils at first as my 3 children discovered the fun of watching a pencil disappear to nothing in under a minute, but once I gave the “you continue to do that and you will be buying your own pencils” talk, that abruptly came to an end.
We also never lose our pencil sharpener anymore because it is plugged into the wall. That right there saves me minutes a day of frustration, as a child wanders all through the house looking for the pencil sharpener.
Update: A helpful item we just got this year
(since I wrote this I got a laminator and am finding it super handy for homeschooling)
A laminator is also really handy for homeschooling. You can laminate simple math facts so your child can practice them over and over again until the have them memorized. You can laminate daily school routines for older children to cross off as they go. You can laminate maps and other reference sheets that your child might be handling over and over again to make them last through all your children.
How about you? What are your favorite office supplies for homeschooling?
