One of my goals for 2014 was to memorize one bible verse a month, yet I was hitting mid February and I still had not even written out 12 verses to memorize yet alone started to memorize them.
I was determined not to give up. I knew I had set my goal small enough to catch up. What was holding me back from working on the goal was coming up with a simple memorization system that would work for me.
I have tried the note card in the pocket trick, and sadly the note card quickly becomes this weeks drier lint disaster as it was soon forgotten moments after I placed it in my pocket and the busy day began.
I have tried post it notes stuck here and there but since the kids took over the washing of the dishes this method doesn’t work for me since I don’t stand still long enough in one place to read a verse over and over.
I also had another problem brewing my daughter had gone to Disneyland with her father and brought me home a Disney lanyard as a gift. I am not sure why how she thought an at home mom would use a lanyard but she was verbally expressing her disappointment in me not using it.
While brainstorming both how to come up with a simple way to memorize bible verses and how to use my new Disney lanyard suddenly the two merged into an idea.
What if I printed out all 12 verses on one sheet of paper, then cut them apart, laminated them ,cut them, hole punched them and then wore the lanyard around the house with the current verse I am memorizing dangling from it.
My idea is working great! Every time I find myself walking from one area of the house to another I grab the verse card so I can see it and work on memorizing it. It is going so well in fact that I am thinking of shooting for one verse memorized each and every week (well except for our week of vacation) for the rest of the year.
Simple Bible Memorization Using A Lanyard
First I made a simple 3 by 4 grid and then played around with fonts and font size until I was able to fit all 12 verses in the squares and still have enough room at the top of each square to punch a hole. (you can make your own, or follow the link at the bottom of your post and print out mine if you want)
After printing out the sheet of verses I then cut each square apart.
I then placed the verses as evenly as I could in an 8 by 11 laminating pouch and put them through the laminator.
Once they had cooled off from being laminated I trimmed around each verse and then hole punched the top.
I clipped one verse to the lanyard and then searched around for something to store the rest of the verses on. I found this small clip that I had bought in a pack of three from the dollar store (the other 2 are in use for house keys for the kids) . The clip works great making it simple to flip to the next verse I need to memorize and place the one I just memorized back on.
If you want to try this method you can print out my bible sheet for your own use if you would like.
The verses deal mainly with words of wisdom God has laid on my heart about blogging ethics, but they can be applied to so many more areas of life. For instances the first one I memorized was on the power of words and I noticed that it is making me think more not just about the words I type but about the words I speak, especially to my loved ones day in and day out.
