( I was given a copy of this book for free for purpose of review, but all opinions are 100% mine)
I have loved the We Are That Family blog for years so when I saw Kristen Welch’s new book Rhinestone Jesus: Saying Yes To God when sparkly, safe faith is no longer enough, being offered for review through Tyndale I signed up to be on the book tour faster than my three children can make a pizza disappear (and that is pretty fast).
My favorite quote from the entire book is “But a dormant dream doesn’t mean you’re not a dreamer” made by Kirsten Welch herself in her chapter about how she got started with her blog.
My second favorite quote from the book was made by Welch’s husband in the same chapter,
“My husband and I curled up with our lattes and did something we’ve never done before: we dreamstormed.
‘It’s sort of like brainstorming,’ my husband said excitedly. ‘Except instead of writing down ideas, we’re writing down our dreams . The wilder, bigger, and crazier, the better.'”
Readers when is the last time you dreamed BIG dreams. For me it has been a long time. I made a WOW goal at the beginning of this year that really stretched me to dream, and even though I see amazing things happening in that area of my life right now, there is still that voice that shouts “it is never going to happen”, that voice breads fear in me.
Thankfully the word God laid on my heart this year to study in His word is “Fear” . What I have discovered so far is that as Christians we should have only one fear…just one…that fear is the reverent fear of God.
Through the pages of Rhinestone Jesus I was reminded over and over of this one fear. Kristen has pushed through a lot of fears in her life , and continues to do so daily, because she fears one thing the most and that is God. When Kristen’s family said yes to God, they said to the world, I might find things you throw at me fearful but I love my God more.
Worldly fear makes us cling. We cling to comfortable surroundings. We cling to our possessions. Godly fear has us lay all we have at His feet and say “it is all yours anyway God, show me what to do with it” and when He does we say yes and do it.
The yes comes with complications, bumps in the road, times so hard we want to quit, but if we just hold on to God’s hand and let Him keep us on the right path we end up with a beautiful story like Kristen Welch’s to tell.
A story of women saved. A story of babies born healthy. A story of redemption and amazing heavenly rewards.
If you struggle with fear, if it holds you back from dreaming big, and saying yes to God , read Rhinestone Jesus and be inspired to dreamstorm and then lay it down at His feet and watch the story unfold.

Rhinestone Jesus is one of those books that you are going to want to pass along to a friend to share the amazing story with once you are done! I know I am. Kristen Welch has also created a 30 Day bible reading plan called “Saying Yes To God” that was inspired by the book, that you can share with your family at the dinner table each evening.
