The afternoon is always when I tend to do my worst eating. There is just too much time between lunch and dinner for me to last without a snack. Once I gave into snacking, I knew I had to find a way to do it smart.
I try to keep my afternoon snack to no more than 250 calories. I try to make sure that my snack is high in protein to help me curb hunger. I also like to indulge my sweet tooth just enough so that it doesn’t revolt on me later.
One of my favorite snacks is trail mix, and after years of playing around with different combinations I have discovered one that delights my taste buds.
Trail Mix Ingredients
1 tablespoon semi sweet chocolate chips. 50 calories
14 whole almonds (not roasted, not salted). 97 calories
1 tablespoon dried cherries. 24 calories
1 tablespoon sunflower seeds (preferably unsalted) 47 calories
Total calories: 218
This snack is also easy to make in bulk measuring out the ingredients into snack size ziplock bags and storing in the fridge or freezer. That way you can grab them on your way out the door to work or to errands or whatever.
