Are you looking at the amount of money you have set aside for Christmas and wishing it was a little bit more–or perhaps a lot more? Don’t worry; it isn’t too late to fatten the Christmas account. Even if you have just a week until Christmas, you can use these ideas to fatten the Christmas account quick!
4 Ways To Fatten The Christmas Account In Less Than 60 Days
You can do this with just a week or more left before Christmas.
Use my handy yard sale checklist to go through your home from top to bottom gathering all the items you are not using and therefore could sell.
Once you have gathered your items, this article will help you sell them for top dollar.
Finally, decide how to sell your items. December isn’t a big “physical” yard sale month, so I suggest going virtual by using Facebook, Craigslist or resale apps to sell your stuff. Although I do use eBay to sell items, I wouldn’t recommend it for quick cash; you need immediate sales and those are usually best found locally.
Facebook Buy & Sell Groups
I have made upwards of one hundred dollars in under an hour using Facebook buy and sell groups. You can’t beat how simple it is to use and the size of the market you can reach.
I think the Craigslist market is shrinking now that Facebook Marketplace has become so popular, but there are still Craigslist diehards out there that are looking to buy items, so I think it is still an option for selling items quickly.
When I sold stuff on Craigslist in the past, I found that the weekend was the best time to sell and that if an item didn’t sell within a week, chances are it wasn’t going to sell. So my suggestion is to use Craigslist only if you have more than a week to sell your stuff. Put your items on Craigslist Thursday evening and keep them up until Monday evening. Then take them down and post what has not sold on Facebook. This will be a bit more work, but it should result in more sales.
Reselling Apps Like LetGo
I have not yet jumped into the reselling app world of LetGo and others like it. However, I think they look like great options for quickly reselling items, provided they have a relatively large pool of active members in your area.
A Few More Item Specific Options
Got Gold? My friend once sold a handful of gold items she no longer wanted for enough money to buy several small Christmas presents. The trick is not to sell a gold item that you will regret parting with later and to look for a gold buying establishment in your area that has a good reputation.
Got Metal? My husband and I were renovating a home once and took out some copper piping; we knew it had resale value, so we took it to our local metal recyclers we were surprised when he gave us over $40 for two handfuls of copper pipe. Metal recyclers don’t just take copper either, contact one in your area for a list of what they accept then start searching your home, yard, shed, garage and attic.
Got Books? Many secondhand bookstores will give you cash for books. It isn’t much usually, but every bit counts and it is fast money. Often they will provide you with a higher return if you take in-store credit instead of cash so if you happen to have a bookworm on your list that doesn’t mind receiving gently used books as gifts you might want to go for that option.
Got Clothes? Toys? Sporting Goods? If you buy brand name clothing, toys and sporting goods for your family and you have some in like new shape that you are willing to part with, check google for the closest consignment store near you that would be looking for the items you have to sell and pays at drop off. You often get much less than you would selling them through another platform, but if you don’t like dealing with meeting strangers to exchange items for cash, this is a good alternative.
2. Create Something To Sell
You can do this with just 30 days or more left until the big day.
If you are good at arts and crafts, this point is for you. Every year my Facebook feed fills with various creative friends selling their handmade items to raise a bit of money for Christmas. They usually use a photo album that shows samples of their work from all angles and then start taking orders. Others opened up their home for an afternoon for a craft sale, either selling what they have on hand or displaying samples and taking orders that they will complete before Christmas.
I have done the Facebook craft sale in the past. Here is what I did to sell my handmade dishcloths a few years in a row.
3. Offer Your Services For A Fee
You can do this with just 30 days or more left until the big day.
What service you can provide may depend on the laws in your area. For example, in many areas, you can’t sell baking unless you have a certified commercial kitchen.
Here is a list of a few ideas to get you thinking of what sort of service you could offer but remember to check local laws first:
- Home cleaning for the holidays
- Decorating for the holidays
- Babysitting while parents Christmas shop
- Gift wrapping
4. Work Fast Earning Point Programs And Apps
You can do this with just 60 days or more left until the big day. Although you can see some results within a few days, but not enough to affect your Christmas fund dramatically.
I have readers who have emailed me saying they earn up to $100 a month with these point reward programs and apps that I am sharing in this list below.
The trick is to find the point activities that pay for doing things you already do right now without getting paid–like searching the web or shopping. Another pointer is to find no-brainer point earning tasks that you can do in those little moments of downtime during the day, such as watching short videos. If you have the time to devote to it, try taking a survey while watching TV to boost points.
