Due to a family health history of cancer I keep a close eye on my waistline never letting it grow more than 10 pounds over my healthy weight number before I start doing something about it. Each time it has grown to that limit I have taken a look at why it is growing so I can put a stop to it before it gets out of hand.
3 Reasons for Your expanding waistline
1. Emotional eating
This is big for me. After my mom passed away well meaning friends visited my home to spend time with me each with a 32 oz Dr Pepper or a large dark chocolate bar, two of my most favored comfort foods. I had so many well meaning friends that it got to the point that one morning before church my husband found me bawling not from grief but from frustration in discovering none of my skirts zipped up anymore.
I didn’t blame my eating on my friends. Sure they were suppliers but they wouldn’t be supplying it if they didn’t know it had a soothing effect on me. They saw me grieving and wanted to make things better. I should also let you know once I explained the situation to them the Dr Pepper and chocolate stopped and they came to just be with me.
Do you eat out of emotion? One way to find out is to question each bite of food you take for a while, was it out of hunger, or was it because you felt…….and food helped temporarily ease the feeling.
2. Over tired
My first child had extreme colic, I slept very little, and at first tried to do chores when he slept during the day because I was holding him the rest of the time trying to make him stop crying. I found myself grabbing sweet treats all day long for quick energy, but they only resulted in horrible energy crashes and a need to wear elastic waistband sweats every day (it was before yoga pants were invented).
It wasn’t until I started napping when he napped that I started to see a bit of the pregnancy weight came off. More came off once I finally got him to sleep for a 4 or 5 hour stretch and felt up to going on long walks with him in a carrier; which as an added bonus made him quite happy.
If afternoons send you to the cookie jar, try seeing if you could cat nap instead. Set a timer and just close your eyes and relax for 15 to 30 minutes and see if the cravings for sugar don’t decrease and you energy level increase.
3.Decrease of activity
My latest 10 pound gain took me by surprise. I am working out 5 to 6 days a week. I get full nights of sleep. I am not under emotional stress. So why the weight gain?
Finally I pin pointed it, I had been training for marathons one in the spring and one in the fall for 2 years in a row, but then due to injury I took a full year off marathon training . I still run now but my runs are much shorter. I also had been painting homes 15 to 20 hours a week, but now I sit in front of a computer and spend that time blogging. Yet I was still eating the same amount of foods I did when I was more active. Decreasing my activity without decreasing my calories is the reason for my current weight gain.
How about you? Have you really taking a close look to how much you move in a day. I suggest buying a simple pedometer and tracking your activity for a while. It was a real eye opener for me and caused me to come up with a plan on how to start moving more and eat less.
