As I have mentioned before I bought a pedometer to help me be more aware of my movement outside of my workout times. Sadly it turns out that movement is very minimal. So I have found a few tricks that increase my daily steps.
3 Simple Ways To Take More Steps
1. I am taking the stairs twice
Our house has all the bedrooms up and the living areas down, and the laundry in the basement.One simple way for me to get more steps in was to make a rule with myself. Each time I get up to go downstairs or upstairs I have to take the stairs twice at a fast pace.
Yes my family thinks it is a bit weird to see me go up and down and then back up again, but since there are 15 stairs that is 30 more steps and stairs work more muscles than walking extra on the flat (and if I have to go to the basement to put in a load of laundry you can double that).
2. I am parking further away on nice weather days
Right now it is the dead of winter in the Midwest and since I am a cold weather chicken, I am going to be kind to myself and start this tip when spring arrives. When the sun’s warmth returns I am going to start parking my car way farther away than normal and power walking to my destination.
3. I am finishing my day with a walking DVD or a walk outside after dinner
When my steps per day have been very dismal I plan to remedy the situation by either doing a 1 mile of a walking DVD or on nice weather days a walk outside with my hubby (which gives both of us some time together too as an added benefit).
