Weight loss is a simple matter of more calories out than calories in. That said, it is sometimes a frustrating process to keep to that simple calculation. Here are 3 ways I am trying to make sure I eat less calories than I am burning.
3 Simple Ways To Kick Start Your Weight Loss
1. Pick a way to track what goes in
You need to be 100% honest about what you are eating if you are going to lose weight. I have fallen off the tracking food intake wagon way too many times in the last two years and when I am off of it my food always goes up even though I tell myself “I will make better choices”. There are as many ways to track food as their are personality types.
- purchase a simple $1 store notebook and write every bite down
- snap a picture of everything you eat just before you put it in your mouth
- download a calorie counter app for your device (there are a tonne out there Lose It is the one I like)
- join an online calorie counting sight ( a good one is spark people)
Try out a few methods to you find one you can stick too. I like a weight loss app because it is simple to look up how many calories different food items have, it also helps me decide how many calories I can eat, and how many calories my workouts burn.
2. Pick a way to track how many calories you are burning
You need to know not just how many calories you burn when you are working out but also how many calories your burn the rest of the day. I use the exercise area of my Lose It app to track my workouts. For my day to day movement I bought a simple inexpensive pedometer and I tracked my average steps for a few days.
I found out I take on average less than 3000 steps a day outside my workouts! Blogging and Homeschooling cause me to do a lot more sitting than I thought. I am still wearing the pedometer and plan to wear it indefinitely for now since I find just seeing those low numbers is making me get up and move more throughout the day.
3. Pick a way to keep water handy at all times
Staying hydrated is very important for healthy weight loss. Water is of course calorie free and the cheapest way to stay hydrated.
If you are really craving a little bit of flavor in your water you can try a few no to low calories ways that I enjoy. When at home I often add a splash of 100% lemon juice to my water (I buy it at Aldis) . For when I am on the go I make sure to always have a few True Lemon Raspberry Lemonade sticks in my purse, they are sweetened with stevia and are just 5 calories per stick (these are hard to find in stores where I live so I am happy to see that Amazon has made them an add on item so that I can throw a box in when I am a few dollars short of their $35 free shipping limit)
An easy way to make sure you always have water available is to purchase a good quality water bottle. Personally I dislike the plastic ones, I think they give the water a funny taste over time (especially if I put something other than water in them a few times). I prefer either a good quality stainless steal bottle such as a Klean Kanteen, or a glass bottle. My husband owns a Lifefactory brand glass bottle and loves it.
