Although I do think that it is possible to get a good workout for free in the privacy of your own home, I believe that there are 3 gym essentials that will make those workouts more comfortable and perhaps even more effective.
3 Essentials For Working Out At Home
1. A good pair of cross trainers
Sure you could join the barefoot revolution and skip the need for shoes , but I don’t think you will find it as comfortable as doing jumping jacks in sneakers, and chances are you might slip from foot sweat while you try your hardest to hold a plank.
In general there are some great deals to be found online for athletic shoes, but my suggestion is that for your first purchase of shoes you go to the store and have someone help you try a few pairs on until you find one that feels comfortable, yet flexible (here are a few ways I save on in store athletic shoe purchases)
2. An exercise mat
You could fold up a blanket for extra cushion, but it is probably way easier to spray down an exercise mat after you sweat all over it than wash the blanket each and every time (better for the environment and your water and electric bill too).
A basic exercise mat.
3. A hand weight set
You could start out with soup cans and work your way up to those 10 pound bags of whole wheat flour in the back of your cupboard that you have been meaning to use to replace the white flour you currently use in all your baking, but that can get awkward. I think a set of hand weights is a great investment for anyone wanting to workout at home for the long haul. You save a bit of money buying a set of 3 and you can also start out light and work up to a heavier weight that way.
There are so many other pieces of gym equipment out there that you could add to your home gym but these are the three basic pieces I personally think all home gyms should have.
(please note I am not a fitness professional just someone who loves working out and sharing what she has learned)
Bad internet connection making it impossible to use free online workout videos? Jillian Michaels DVD’s are a great back up (or primary) workout. I love her 30 day shred. You could let your Swagbucks to pay for a title of your own.
